PYSB Storytelling 3 Acts, Newbury 2024

6 Days URBAN Sketching Retreat in Newbury with Swasky, Santi Salles and Inma Serrano – SOLD OUT – Waiting List open!

In 2024 we continue with a PYSB Summer Retreat of 6 days where we get to know a place in depth through sketching during morning sessions but take time to enjoy the summer and other close by locations nearby that will give us a greater in depth appreciation of the place we are in, its culture and environs. This time we are going to Newbury in the UK a small town on the Kennet and Avon canal at the crossroads between Oxford and Winchester, Reading and Bristol.

The course fee includes the morning workshops and an arranged trip during these workshops (to Stonehenge and Salisbury) but the team proposes additional activities (totally optional) that we can enjoy together in the afternoon/evening, within walking distance or accessible by train. There will be some additional local charges for transport, entrance tickets to museums, bar drinks etc (for afternoon/evening activities).
We will be hosted by the City Arts Newbury, founded by Isabel Carmona, with an exhibition from our three tutors and Isabel on Storytelling.

The course language is English but all the tutors speak Spanish.

Morning workshops / Talleres matutinos

In Newbury, we will concentrate the taught workshop during the mornings from 10am to 1pm.  Participants will receive two sessions with each tutor and explore Storytelling themes that Inma, Swasky and Santi present below.

We’ll follow up with suggested lunch locations (or picnic spots) and a short afternoon rest time. In the afternoon/evenings we’ll coordinate activities to do together (optional) either in Newbury or nearby to enjoy the landscape, historical locations, good views and continue drawing in the evenings together. We are also aiming to organise a relaxing yoga drawn session one afternoon/evening.

Workshop sessions / Talleres

Sketch happy (Inma Serrano)

Inma will lead two sessions that encompass the joy she gets from urban sketching and make her happy. She tells us that sketching in the streets is essential in her life because it allows her to zoom, in an ingenious, almost childish, way into the people and things around her.

Inma will lead two sessions on the following themes.

Inma impartirá dos sesiones basadas en los siguientes temas:

Session 1 / Sesion 1: Crowded Places/Lugares abarrotados

The places around us are full of people. If you tell the story of a place, you should pay attention to the people there. People who come and go .People who stay. In this workshop we are going to focus on people in different places and the mark they leave on them

Session 2 / Sesión 2: Inkstories/Tintstorias

In this workshop we will use ink as a tool of expression to tell the stories that surround us. Ink has many graphic possibilities. We are going to experiment with this ancient technique in urban sketching, trying different tools, giving our sketches many ways of expression

crossroads and Stones (SWASKY)

In these two sessions we’re all about telling our stories through drawings and words in our Urban Sketching journal. We’ll explore how your personal experiences can come alive in every sketch and word.
During our time together, we’ll see how your voice and drawings team up to make your sketches tell stories that really mean something. We’ll do hands-on activities to practice capturing the moment and creating stories with your drawings.
So, join me for two fun sessions where you can express yourself in your special way through sketches and stories. There are no limits – just let your creativity flow and turn your experiences into awesome art.

Session 1 Voice and personal narrative/ Voz y narrativa personales

Join me as we kick off our Urban Sketching adventure! In this first session, we’ll explore expressing yourself through voice and visuals. Dive into capturing significant moments through hands-on activities, then share your creations and discover the magic of combining your personal voice with sketches. It’s all about making your stories pop off the page!

Session 2

Get ready for the next level in Urban Sketching! In session two, we’ll delve into the craft of visual storytelling. Learn techniques like composition and lighting to elevate your sketches.
Challenge yourself with creating advanced visual sequences, like making a mini-movie with your sketches. Showcase your work and join discussions on the evolving craft of storytelling through sketches. Let’s turn your sketches into captivating narratives together!
