6 Days URBAN Sketching Retreat in Mallorca with Swasky, Santi Salles and ISABEL CARMONA

In 2023 we propose a new concept of PYSB Summer Retreat of 6 days where we get to know a place in depth through sketching during morning sessions but take time to enjoy the summer and other close by locations nearby that will give us a greater in depth appreciation of the beautiful town of Pollença, its culture and environs.
The course fee includes the morning workshops but the team proposes additional activities (totally optional) that we can enjoy together in the afternoon/evening. There will be some additional local charges for transport, excursions, entrance tickets to museums etc (for afternoon activities).
We will be hosted by the Museu Dionís Bennàssar of Pollenca where the local painter Dionis Bennassar used to live. His granddaughter Cati will be our host and contributes a great deal of local knowledge to this experience. With Cati we are able to organise visits to places that are normally not open to the public or unknown to tourists.

The course language is English but all the tutors speak Spanish.

En 2023, proponemos un nuevo concepto, un Retiro de Verano de PYSB de 6 días donde podremos conocer nuestra localización en profundidad durante las sesiones de dibujo por las mañanas pero también tener tiempo de disfrutar del verano y de otros sitios cercanos que enriquecerán nuestra apreciación del bonito pueblo de Pollença, su cultura y sus cercanías.
La matricula del curso incluye los talleres de por la mañana pero el equipo propone actividades adicionales (totalmente optativas) de las que podremos disfrutar juntos por la tarde. Habrá algún cargo adicional para el transporte, excursiones, entradas a museos, etc. (para las actividades).
Nuestra base estará en el Museu Dionís Bennàssar de Pollenca donde el pintor local Dionis Bennassar vivió. Su nieta Cati nos servirá de anfitriona y contribuirá con su conocimiento local a esta experiencia. Con Cati podremos organizar visitas a lugares normalmente no abiertos al publico o desconocidos por los turistas.

Morning workshops / Talleres matutinos

In Pollença, we will concentrate the taught workshop during the mornings from 10am to 1pm to avoid the hottest time of the day.  Participants will receive two sessions with each tutor and explore Colour Scape themes that Isabel, Swasky and Santi present below.

We’ll follow up with suggested lunch locations and an afternoon rest time. In the evenings we’ll propose activities to do together either in Pollenca or nearby to enjoy the stunning landscape views and continue drawing in the evenings together.

En Pollença, concentramos los talleres por las mañanas de 10am a 1pm para evitar las horas de más calor del día. Los participantes recibiran dos sesiones con cada tutor, que exploran los temas de Color y Espacio que Isabel, Swasky y  Santi presentan a continuacion.

Después de los talleres habrá sugerencias sobre lugares de comer y ratos de descanso por la tarde. Más tarde propondremos actividades juntos en Pollenca o lugares de los alrededores para disfrutar del panorama natural y continuar dibujando por las tardes juntos.

Workshop sessions / Talleres

Colour – Feeling the Environment – Seeing the Light (Isabel Carmona)

During Isabel’s sessions we will capture a complex view in watercolours using colourful marks and expressive brushstrokes.  We will use direct watercolour to set up and paint our sketch, capturing the atmosphere of light present.

We will learn to simplify complex views, architecture, and landscape when we sketch in watercolours.  By the end of the workshop, we will use brushstrokes more confidently and won’t be shy about using colour.

Watercolours are a fluid and expressive medium that can help us in capturing quickly, large, and slightly overwhelming views. It is a fun medium and it should not be feared but enjoyed fully.

At the end of the workshop the participants should be able to

• Feel confident making various marks with the brush and have explored various brush types
•  Simplify complex views, using the paint to set up the shapes they see in front of them
• Layer watercolour marks to define light and shade within their pictures.
• Understand contrast in colour – use of complementary colours.
• Decide whether the view needs any drawn marks in another media to sharpen their view
• In short, enjoy watercolour painting any view.

Durante las sessiones de Isabel, pintaremos vistas complejas en acuarela, usando marcas de color y pinceladas expresivas. Usaremos la acuarela directamente (sin dibujo) para organizar y pintar nuestro sketch, y recogiendo la atmosfera de iluminacion delante de nosotros.

Aprenderemos a simplificar vistas complejas, arquitectura y paisaje cuando pintamos en acuarela. El taller nos ayudará a usar pinceladas con confianza y a no ser timidos usando el color.

La acuarela es un medio fluido y expresivo que nos ayuda a capturar rápidamente vistas grandes y un poco intimidantes. Es un medio divertido y no debe ser temido sino disfrutado al máximo.

Al final del taller, los participantes deben ser capaces de:

• Tener soltura en hacer marcas variadas con el pincel y haber probado varios tipos de pinceles.
• Simplificar vistas complejas, usando la pintura para bocetar las formas que ven delante suyo
• Usar capas de acuarelas y marcas variadas para definir luces y sombras en sus dibujos
• Entender el contraste en color, usando colores complementarios con soltura
• Decidir si el dibujo necesita alguna marca dibujada en otro medio distinto para reforzar la vista, o no.
• En resumen, disfrutar de la acuarela cuando pinten cualquier vista.

Session 1 / Sesión 1

We’ll focus on brushstrokes and applying marks to a view first followed by learning to see and express the light and shade of a complex view.

Nos centraremos en usar pinceladas y hacer variedad de marcas en una vista. Después aprenderemos a ver y expresar luz y sombra en vistas complejas.

Session 2 / Sesion 2

We will build on what we’ve learned on session 1 and work in layers, choose contrasting colours and build thinking into our drawing, pausing to take stock while the paint dries, planning our next brushtrokes and watercolour marks more carefully.

En la segunda sesión profundizaremos en lo que aprendimos en la primera y trabajaremos en capas, el use de colores de contraste y poner algo de intención y pensamiento en nuestro dibujo, parándonos a pensar y reflexionar mientras las capas de acuarela se secan, planificando las marcas/manchas de nuestras próximas pinceladas más cuidadosamente.

Once upon a time a color… / Tell me more (SWASKY)

All along Swasky’s sessions you will explore how colour can be used to tell a story in your sketches. Text and writing will also be part of both sessions.

En las sesiones de Swasky explorarás cómo el color se puede usar para contar una historia en tus dibujos. Texto y escritura jugarán también su parte en cada sesión.

Session 1

This session will encourage you to experiment with colour choices that evoke different emotions or convey different moods, and to consider how colour can be used to add depth and meaning to your sketches. We will delve into history and how important the use of colour is for different artists.

Esta sesión os animará a experimentar con la elección de colores que evoquen diferentes emociones o que transmitan distintos estados de ánimo. También se considerará como el color se puede usar para añadir profundidad y significado a vuestros dibujos. Nos adentraremos en la historia y hablaremos de la importancia del uso del color para distintos artistas.

Session 2

You will also learn to pay close attention to the colors of buildings, signs, and other elements in the urban environment, and to think about how those colors can help to tell the story of the place.

Aprendereis a prestar atención a los colores de edificios, señales y otros elementos del entorno urbano y pensar como el uso de estos colores os pueden ayudar a contar la historia del lugar.

The goals of these sessions are :

To help you understand how colour can be used to enhance the storytelling aspect of their urban sketches and to develop your  skills in using colour to evoke emotions, convey moods, and add depth and meaning to their drawings.

Session 2 – Tell me more… :

To help you understand the unique character of the urban environment you are sketching and to develop your skills in using colour to evoke the mood and atmosphere of the place, and to create a sense of place in your sketches. These goals will help you to bring more meaning and depth to your sketches, and to convey a more complete and engaging story of the urban environment.

 Ayudarte a comprender el carácter único del entorno urbano que se está dibujando y desarrollar la habilidad del uso del color para evocar emociones y la atmósfera del lugar, creando la presencia del lugar en vuestros dibujos.  Estas metas os ayudarán a enriquecer el significado y profundidad de vuestros dibujos y a relatar una historia más completa y amena del entorno urbano.

Lines in Colour (Santi Sallés)

Energy lines of Graphite and Colour

The objective of this workshop is to draw in a fresh way and with expression. Lose your fear, scratch, deform and enjoy handling pencils. We will do exercises and practice with one and  two coloured pencils and with watercolour washes (first) and then with colored pencils on top. At the end we will make a complex drawing with what we have learned in the previous exercises.

Líneas Enérgicas en Grafito y Color.

El objetivo de este taller es dibujar de una forma fresca y con expresión. Perder el miedo a rayar, deformar y disfrutar usando lápices.  Ejercitaremos y practicaremos con uno y dos lápices de colores y con manchas de acuarela (primero) seguidas del uso de lápices de color después.  Al final del taller, haremos un dibujo complejo con lo que hemos aprendido en los ejercicios anteriores.

Organic Colour Lines

In this session we will work in a different way, we will work spontaneously, mixing spots with colored lines that we will draw with bamboo canes and wooden sticks. We will use inks of different colours and watercolours. We will start with basic exercises to get used to the unpredictable canes and sticks and then we will end up making a complex drawing.

Líneas de Color Orgánicas

En esta sesión trabajaremos de forma distinta, espontáneamente, mezclando manchas con  lineas de color dibujadas con cañas de bambú y palos de madera. Usaremos tintas de varios colores y acuarelas.  Empezaremos con ejercicios básicos para acostumbrarnos al uso de las cañas y palos y al final haremos un dibujo más complejo

Workshop Materials/Supplies you need to bring:

• Graphite Pencil (Pitt oil Base pencil Medium by Faber Castell)
• Coloured Pencils (we recommended Polychromos by Faber Castell or similar)
• Watercolours – artist quality is best – White Nights (St Petersburgh), W&N, Talens etc
• Normal watercolour brushes – best for painting, varied sizes: small (no tiny), medium, large -good quality: Rosemary Brushes, Escoda, Da Vinci etc
• Waterbrush (if you want) – optional
• Travel seat/stool  – to be able to seat wherever you need to.
• Other tools you normally use

We’ll provide you with a sketchbook (likely to be concertina A5) so if you want to bring anything else do bring that along (200gms minimum).

We will also give you some bamboo canes to use for Santi’s session – you can also bring any other small sticks implements you want.

Materiales que necesitáis traer para los talleres:

• Lapiz de grafito Pitt Oil Base Medio de Faber Castell.
• Lapices de colores (recomendamos Polychromos de Faber Castell, o similar)
• Acuarelas – calidad de artista es mejor – marcas White Nights, (St Petersburgh), Windsor & Newton, Talens, etc.
• Pinceles de acuarela normales – los mejor para pintar, tamaños variados : pequeño (no minusculo), medio y grande – calidad buena como Escoda, Da Vinci, Rosemary Brushes, etc
• Pincel de agua (si quieres) – opcional
• Un asiento pequeño y portable – para poder sentaros donde queráis.
• Otras herramientas de dibujo que useis normalmente

Os daremos con un cuaderno (probablemente concertina A5) pero si queréis traer algo distinto (o mayor tamaño) traedlo (gramaje mínimo 200gms)

También os daremos una caña de bambú para el taller con Santi – traed cualquier otro palito o implemento que queráis

As part of the retreat week we will visit many local places that are normally not open to the public. Our host, Cati Bennassar (grandaughter of the painter Dionis Bennassar) will help us to arrange our visits, meet local businesses and visit little known places as she has local knowledge.

To Book your place

NOTE: The fee paid includes a £25 non refundable ticketing fee (e.g in case of any cancellation or if the course has to be abandoned due to unforseen health or other guvernamental restrictions).

Cancellation policy: All fees [minus a ticketing fee of £25 which is included on above price] are refundable if cancelled more than 6 weeks prior to commencement of course.. If cancelled between 6 and 2 weeks before the start of the course, a cancellation fee of £50 will be retained on top of the ticketing fee. No refund will be possible two weeks before the course.
In the event of too few registrants, all monies [minus half the ticketing fee] will be refunded.

The PYSB team reserves the right of last minute changes to the teaching panel due to illness or another unexpected circumstance. We will maintain in any case the quality of the course.
